It’s a new year, and that means New Year’s resolutions. As we look in the rearview at 2020, a lot of us want to “resolve” to be on the beach in Cabo (or anywhere that’s NOT home).

But if fitness is on your list of resolutions for 2021, today’s podcast is all about the THREE things you should definitely NOT do going into the new year.

  1.  Don’t do too much exercise. Huh? What about “New year, new me”?

Come into the new year with smaller goals to start. Instead of resolving to work out 7 days a week, start with 3. Otherwise, your New Year’s resolutions will only remind you of what you left undone that week, and you’ll abandon those resolutions altogether.

2.  Don’t cut calories too much. Why? Because of the Physiological Model of Extreme Caloric Restriction. Duh.

That’s just a fancy way to describe the scientific reasons your metabolism is smarter than you and your restrictive diet. The podcast explains this in detail, but basically, it boils down to making small changes that you can sustain long term, and those restrictive New Year’s resolutions just won’t last.

3.  Don’t WAIT. Join that gym NOW. Go to the store and replace those Reese’s cups in your pantry with healthier options NOW.

You wouldn’t show up to college without registering for classes, would you? No! Make a plan. Do you want to go for a run tomorrow? Oh really? Do you have the right shoes and socks? How far are you going? Will you try to run the next day? WHAT’S YOUR PLAN? If you don’t make a plan, you will run up against obstacles and it will never happen. Dad quote warning: “Fail to plan, plan to fail.” You’re welcome.

If you want to own those New Year’s resolutions so that you can be a force in your own life in 2021, plus hear ALL the science I skimmed over in today’s post, listen to today’s podcast!
