Do the Boring Work

I’ve been thinking a lot about core values recently, and what I want to teach my kids, both in how I act and the words we use.

It’s been a really fun experience to think through what is important to me, and which of my traits I’d like to pass down, and which I DO NOT.

Have you thought through that in your own life? I’m just curious, since It’s so novel to me at the moment.

3 Thoughts

  1. Why > How
Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning, said: “Those who have a ‘why’ to live, can bear with almost any ‘how’.”

That’s true for everything. If your “why” is strong enough, no matter if your “how” is running 5 miles at 4am and only eating broccoli and tilapia for months – you’ll be able to do it.

  2. Do the Boring Work
    It’s quote week apparently…
“Be regular and orderly in your life, so that you may be violent and original in your work.” ― Gustav Flaubert. There is a lot of monotony in fitness.

Despite what IG shows us, the best bodies: do the same exercises, eat the same foods, do the same walks…

When you can handle the boring work, you’ll start seeing success. Need every day to be new and fun? That’s a recipe for burnout and 0 results.

  3. Be Inevitable
Be the person who does what they say they’ll do, when they say they’ll do it.
Either find a way, or make one” – Hannibal. This quote was attributed to Hannibal before he crossed the Alps. With Elephants.

It doesn’t matter what you do if you don’t have any goals. But the second you say you’re going to do something. Help a friend move, get in shape, etc. you damn sure better do it.

The more often we don’t keep our own word, the less value it has to ourselves.

1 Question

  1. Do YOU believe you?In talking with a friend the other day he mentioned offhandedly 3 separate things that he had SAID but not followed through on.Getting back in shape – It got busy, and then it was the holidays…
Getting his Scuba certification – Couldn’t travel
Writing a book – started it but haven’t touched it in a year

    Is that your experience?

When you tell people a goal, do they give you the “oh that’s a nice thought sweetie” – face, or do they say “sh*t, ok, when is the grand opening?”

We’re always listening to ourselves. If you say something is going to happen, it’s your job to make it so.
