Busting Fat Loss Myths Left and Right

When it comes to fat burn, what’s real and what’s marketing?

Alright, where do I start? I’m feeling a little fired up.

That’s because people like Gwenyth Paltrow and Tracy Anderson are feeding you some bullsh*t about fat loss.

So real quick: You’re being lied to. Plain and simple.

People in the “fitness” industry that don’t have a basic understanding of the biochemical reactions in your body should not be talking to you about “muscle tone” or the “fat-burning zone.”

News flash: These concepts are also myths. I’ll explain…

But first, a story.

I got a private message on social media one day from someone that said:

“Hey Nate, I want to build muscle, but not big, puffy bodybuilder muscles like yours. I want long, lean, toned muscles.”

My first thought? I have puffy bodybuilder muscles?! Sweet, I’ve always wanted those.

Busting Fat Loss Myths Left and Right

So, here’s the deal. Muscle tone isn’t really a thing. When you see someone who has toned arms, for example, it just means that they have less body fat, NOT that their muscles somehow toned in a different way.

Also, wanna know what else? There’s no such thing as a “fat-burning zone.” Humans will do anything to get in that zone—boot camps, HIIT workouts, Crossfit. All of these programs have the same, basic tenant: Get the sh*t kicked out of you in order to get in the fat-burning zone.

WRONG! On so many levels.

You Can Stop Torturing Your Body Now

First of all, I now give you permission to STOP HATING YOURSELF with your workouts. You don’t have to feel like you’re dying to build muscle and lose fat.

Secondly, if you take nothing else away from this rant, I want you to know:

If you are training for fat loss, all you need to do is the exact same workouts you would do if you were training for building muscle. Let the simplicity of that statement sink in for a moment.

Basically, if you want to lose fat, build muscle. The routine is simple—progress gradually to heavier weights each week and get more efficient in your workouts, and you will be fat burning all over the place.

I’m talking all about this on this week’s Million Dollar Body episode and throwing a few people (and myths!) under the bus shamelessly.

Key Takeaways:

  • The best exercises that burn fat AND build muscle at the same time
  • Why the Peloton that you paid an exorbitant amount of money for won’t take you to the next level
  • The science behind building muscle as the most efficient way to burn fat instead of the bullsh*t you’re hearing online

If you’re ready to separate fact from fiction when it comes to fat loss and start working out without hating your life, this podcast is for you!
