Explain it Like I’m 5: Carb Backloading

Carb backloading is the practice of eating most of the carbohydrates (bread, rice, pasta, fruits) after working out.

There are two main reasons for this.

  • Carbohydrates help refuel muscles after a long workout. So it’s better to eat them after lifting in order to repair the muscle damage you did during the workout, and ensure that you are able to come back better and stronger the next time.
  • If you’ve ever felt sleepy after eating a big lunch than you’ll understand this next idea. Eating most of your carbs in the evening allows your body to shift into “relax and recover” mode, which will help you sleep better through the night.

By working with your body’s natural chemical cycles, you can ensure that you’re not storing fat in the middle of the day, which is when most people are least active.

This is an easy way to have more energy during the day and for your workout, sleep better at night, and make sure you’re recovering to the best of your ability. Try this simple life hack today and see how much better you feel.

  1. Great simple piece of advice! I skipped the the sandwich today and had a baked potatoe instead! I feel great!

    • Great job! Baked potatoes have a good amount of carbs in them also, so make sure you’re pairing it with a protein in order to moderate your blood sugar for a high energy feel-good kind of day!
